How to tell if shoes are really Made in Spain

Plenty of brands say "Made in Spain" when only the final step happens here, or simply label a shoe produced elsewhere. These are the signals you can check yourself before buying, and how we meet them in our workshop in Crevillent, Alicante.

Six signals that never fail

  1. 1. Look for the country of manufacture, not the brand's country

    A Spanish brand does not mean Spanish manufacturing. The box and insole should state where the shoe was made, not just a head office. "Designed in Spain" usually means made somewhere else.

  2. 2. Check the three European labelling symbols

    Footwear sold in the EU must show the material of upper, lining and sole with pictograms. Leather, textile, other materials or coated leather. If all three say "other materials", you are not buying leather.

  3. 3. Ask where the leather is tanned

    Leather tanned in Spain (Igualada, Ubrique, the Levante) is traceable and the brand can name the tannery. If nobody can tell you, the leather probably arrives pre-cut from abroad.

  4. 4. Inspect the lasting and the stitching

    Turn the shoe over: even seams, visible stitching where the sole meets the upper, hand-burnished edges and a full leather lining are workshop work. Stiff glue lines and synthetic linings point to mass production.

  5. 5. The workshop should have a name and an address

    A real maker can show you the workshop, the hands and the town. We make our shoes in Crevillent, Alicante, and you can visit us or ask for photos of the process.

  6. 6. The price has to add up

    A handmade Spanish leather shoe cannot cost 39 EUR. Between materials, workshop hours and European wages, the realistic floor is far higher. A suspiciously low price is the most honest signal of all.

Quick checklist before you pay

  • The page says "made in Spain", not just "Spanish brand".
  • Labelling shows leather in upper, lining and insole.
  • The brand can tell you where the leather is tanned.
  • Seams and edges are finished by hand.
  • The workshop has a name, a town and a face.
  • The price matches the work behind it.
